Like the Moon, I Go Through Phases - honoring your cycle

Do you ever feel like you are fighting your cycle? Like when that time of the month comes around you and those around are simply a victim to your hormones?

You are not alone.

But I want to challenge you - why do we have to fight something so natural and that we experience... well, often. Maybe, there is a way to -pardon my pun- go with the flow.

In many cultures, a long time ago, a woman’s cycle was honored. Viewed as a source of strength and magic.

When a woman was “PMS-ing,” she was viewed as fierce, intuitive, and assertive. People would come to her with questions.

When a woman was bleeding, they had the “red tents,” where they would go with other women to rest, bleed, eat, and be treated with luxury.

Different phases of your cycle represent different emotional experiences and you can use this to your benefit.

Learning about my cycle forever changed my life and helped me connect to myself on a deeper level, and in all honesty - let go of the shame society has created regarding our periods.

So let’s dive on in, shall we?!

Pre-ovulation: this is a time when your energy is being restored and your body is preparing itself for fertilization. You’ll find you have more energy. This is a good time to start brainstorming projects and get in a creative mood or to be more active and social.

Ovulation: this is a time when your body is in baby-making mode! You may find your libido increases. You feel more attractive and flirty. This is a good time to take action on your ideas and begin to create!

Pre-menstrual: your body is preparing to shed the egg. You feel more assertive and “cranky.” This is a good time to focus more inward. During PMS, do you feel more stress and anxiety? It’s a good idea to take a look at what annoys and upsets you and begin to go inward - does a boundary need to be set? Does action need to be taken? Is there something you need to let go of?

Menstrual: this is a time of release and doing what I call “letting go with the flow.” The inner work you did while PMSing... now it’s time to let go of what energy no longer serves you. You may feel emotional (grieving - your body is grieving the loss of the egg, you emotions may be grieving the loss of what you were holding onto emotionally). Rest, relax. Take a day off. Indulge in self-care.

This all may seem a little “woo-woo“ to you if you are not into spirituality. But it doesn’t have to be woo-woo if that isn’t you. It is not the prayer or the tarot cards or crystals or the rosary that makes a difference, it is the intention behind these things. What I mean is you can simply use this process as a way to be introspective.

Understand that during PMS and your menses, you aren‘t going to exactly have a ton of energy as you do in other phases of your cycle. I hear a lot of women complain how they will be caught in a new wave of motivation and then ad few weeks into it, they sabotage it because they become tired. Maybe in understanding your body will experience different energetic levels during each phase of your cycle will help you stop the cycle of shame many women feel. Go with the flow, girl!

Pay attention to how you feel during each phase.

Get a period tracker app. If you have an iPhone, period tracking is part of the “health” app on your phone. I have used the Clue app in the past and I loved it because it got smart about my cycle the more I tracked. For instance, if on day 20, I am typically feeling more anxious, the clue app will tell me.

In the end, having a better idea of your cycle will help you understand yourself and where you are in life. Remember: like the moon, you go through phases.

Happy tacking Ladies!
